All of our puppies are fed Bil-Jac Select and are started on Iverhart Plus and Frontline at 8 weeks old. Bil-Jac is mostly chicken and has never ever been recalled. It might be expensive but a dog will eat half as much Bil-Jac as they would any other dog food so in the long run you are not only making your dog more healthy to live a longer life but you are actually saving money. If you still can't afford Bil-Jac then feed the most natural private label you can afford but keep in mind that if the food has been recalled before even if it was years ago that you are still putting your dog's life at risk. I can not stress enough the importance of the food a dog eats please do your research because I did and that is the main reason why I feed Bil-Jac to all of my dogs. Are the first two to four  ingredients some type of chicken ?  Bil-Jac helps dogs maintain a healthy weight while giving them extremely toned muscles. If they need to gain weight then they gain it and if they need to lose weight then they lose it. It is a high fat high protien food and that is what Chihuahuas need to eat. Chihuahuas will over eat cheap foods causing them to become overweight because they are not getting the high fat they need. Even when the food is measured out they still get overweight.  I have one Chihuahua that was fed Purina or Pedigree as a puppy and she had bloodly diarrhea for months. She had no viruses and it did not go away until she started to eat Bil-Jac . She has a very sensitive stomach and it took a little while of her adjusting to and eating the Bil-Jac for the diarrhea to stop. My Uncles toy Poodle was puking up all cheap dog foods and was so sick he would not even eat real chicken. I took over Bil-Jac and he woofed it down ! Boss the toy poodle happily has never had a problem since. A lot of  Poodles have very sensitive tummies and need food that is easy to digest. This food gives a show coat and I have seen it work miracles with any type of skin  or coat condition and even allergies. My German Shepherd  and rescues also eat Bil-Jac. In my opinion Purina,Pedigree ,Science Diet, Nutro and Eukanuba are some of the worst dog foods on the market. As recently as late 2009 and even in 2008 Nutro food has been proven to have higher than normal to lethal levels of zinc in their foods as well as arsenic which is deadly poison you can learn more about arsenic here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arsenic_poisoning . This was studied by a independent laboratory that is ran on public donations. I had to watch her scream and suffer in pain at the vets office and 1,700 dollars later she still did not make it. I thank God everyday that Bam was so picky that he would not eat anything else but Bil-Jac and because of that he is still here with me. Angel would have never hurt a fly and was even allowed around my baby holland lop bunnies. I had two friends deathly affraid of pitbulls and even they would come into my home and pet my Angel. Me and Bam still miss her dearly everyday. Cheap or cheaply made dog foods can even contain ingredients that can cause diabetes and many other illnesses. So yes if you love your dog and your dog is your baby and your dog is so much more than a dog to you and is a part of your family or like your child then yes you will feed Bil-Jac because you wont want to take a chance on them losing their life from eating crappy food ! I stand behind Bil-Jac 100 percent and have seen first hand what changing a dog over to it can do for their health. As a person that does sometimes do rescue work I have seen it bring dogs back to life from the brink of death from emaciation. I had  a rescue named Mary Lou we called her Lulu for short. When we were given Lulu she was very anemic and dehydrated. Lulu was covered in hundreds of fleas and had the worst case of worms I have ever seen. Every single bone on her body stuck out and I honestly was not sure she would live. The white parts of her coat were yellow and brown. My neighbors got to see us putting frontline on Lulu in the front yard and were shocked at how many fleas she had on her.  Two weeks later at different times the same two different  neighbors that had seen her before thought she was a different dog and when I told them no that is Lulu they could not believe their eyes and not one bone on her body stuck out any longer.  Of course I  had to work hard to get her that way. Lulu was a fox terrier chihuahua mix that was handed over to me for adoption by a neglectful owner that begged me to take her. Lulu shredded my 1800 dollar mattress amongst many other things but I have never regreted saving her life and every penny I spent doing it was well worth it. We have a rescue named Sweets. Sweets is a pitbull mix that had 30 to 40 cigar and ciggarette burns all over her body and a bad wound on her chest from being shot with a pellet gun at 5 or 6 months old when we found her. I had to put food down and walk very far away for more than a month for her to eventually let me pet her. Sweets is for sure vicious towards other people and was never adoption material.  She would have been put down so we kept her. She has always been a very big girl at around 99 to 100 pounds and most of this weight was gained after she was spayed. We tried every diet  or  lite food we could find and she was always starving and would not lose very much weight maybe 2 to 4 pounds. I am proud to say she is now closer to 80 pounds thanks to Reduced Fat Bil-Jac. Thank you Bil-Jac ! We also use the same galaxy guaranteed non leptospirosis vaccines a good vet would use. If your vet gives your toy breed dog a vaccine with leptospirosis in it then I would suggest getting a new vet. A good vet would not want to take the chance of putting your precious dog in danger for money. A lot of vets do this because they want to make money on selling the steroid shot that stops the allergic reaction but can also kill or permanently damage your dog.   If you plan on getting your puppy vaccinated at your vets please let us know so we do not vaccinate your puppy. Recent studies have shown we do over vaccinate our animals and too many vaccines can cause auto immune diseases. I do not give health guarantees on puppies that I do not vaccinate. Please do not use feed store vaccines on your puppy. This is very dangerous because even the brands that say they have no leptospirosis still have parts of leptospirosis and can cause the exact same deadly allergic reaction that leptospirosis does. When I first started out two puppies that were given to me almost died this way. I am saying this for a reason because I want to prevent other people from going through the same things I have been through.  If your vet does not want to give your puppy heartworm prevention until 6 months of age then please contact me for the number to my vet. I have encountered this same problem and usually by the time they are 6 months old they test positive for heartworms. Chihuahuas never ever make it through this extremely expensive kind of treatment of posionous arsenic based shots.  Sadly a lot of vets are not trust worthy but I can tell you without a doubt that mine is. I do give out my personal vets information with all of my puppies. He is the only vet I would ever recommend because he will not only save you money but he wont put your dog through anything that is not absolutely nesessary to try to make extra money. I would like to point out that not all of my puppies meet exact breed standards. I breed for health first  and not for what a breed standard says a chihuahua should look like. If a breeder seems to be too concerned with the breed standards then you might want to look for another breeder to buy a puppy from. Also I do not line breed I only like breed.  It is entirely practically impossible not to like breed because pretty much every dog is going to be related to each other even if it is 4 to 8 genrerations back.  Ask a breeder if the Sire and Dam of a puppy you are interesed in are related and if they are how are they related  ?  Are they Mother and Son ? Are they brother and sister ? Or even half brother and half sister ?  I  do I ask and I want to see pictures of the Sire and Dam and especially pedigrees so I know for a fact that the dog or puppy I am buying is not from a brother and sister or Mother and Son breeding. I want to add quality bloodlines to my breeding program that are also genetically sound as well.  You can breed different champion bloodlines together to produce dogs that meet breed standards so all of this close inbreeding is not exactly  nesessary .Save yourself the heartache of buying a pet that is severly inbred and has genetic defects because of it.  This documentary shows the importance of not buying an extremely inbred dog.
